Extensive exemption and remission arrangements protect those likely to have difficulty in paying charges (NHS prescription and dental charges, optical and hospital travel costs).
The NHS prescription charge is a flat-rate amount which successive Governments have thought it reasonable to charge for those who can afford to pay for their medicines. Prescription prepayment certificates (PPCs) offer real savings for people who need extensive medication.
These charges apply in England only. In Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales prescriptions are free of charge.
PPCs are available by 10 monthly direct debit instalment payments. The certificate allows anyone to obtain all the prescriptions they need for £2 a week. If you are prescribed four items each month for example, you can save more than £305 with a 12 month PPC.
You can apply for a PPC online, call the order line on 0300 330 1341 or apply by post – sending an application form and payment to NHS Help with Heath Costs, PPC Issue Office, PO Box 854, Newcastle Upon Tyne, NE99 2DE.
Please find more information about a prescription prepayment certificate on the NHS website.
There is also further information about prescription exemptions and fees on the NHS website.
